INNOVATIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING

IN THE CENTRAL OKANAGAN

The learning sciences are enriching our understanding of how people learn best. Schools that are designed to leverage knowledge about learning will empower tomorrow's generation to become powerful learners, skilled workers and engaged citizens.

Educators across our district are sharing their curiosity about how we might use research about The Nature of Learning to explore the creation of innovative learning environments.

LEARNING PRINCIPLES

Educational research suggests that there are principles that we can use to guide us as we innovate the ways that we design learning experiences with and for our students.

SHIFTING THE PEDAGOGICAL CORE

In our district, educators are shifting their role as educators, the way they are approaching curriculum design, and the way they are using resources and interacting with the environment, in order to empower learners to be at the center of their learning.  They are 'dialing up' the role of their learners

The OECD has called this 'shifting the pedagogical core.'

Where can you find more resources and information to help you dial up the role of the learners in your care? You will notice that there is no specific recipe for doing this. Instead, educators in our district are seeking learning in a variety of areas to create innovative learning environments in their own context.

HOW EDUCATORS ARE INNOVATING TEACHING AND LEARNING TO SHIFT THE PEDAGOGICAL CORE

Educational research suggests that in order to innovate learning environments and shift the elements of the pedagogical core, there are four things we need to consider.

These include:

1. Regrouping educators to create increased opportunities for learning and collaborating.

2. Regrouping learners in different ways throughout the day to create a variety of opportunities for students to learn and collaborate.

3. Rethinking the way that time is allocated so learning can be connected and integrated.

4. Continually seeking to learn new teaching and learning strategies that will put students at the center of their learning.

Similar to a thriving ecosystem in nature, an innovative learning environment requires many interconnected elements.  Every unique learning environment has its own 'beating heart,' the thing that makes it unique in order to allow the learners in that context to thrive. This means that no two innovative learning environments will look the same. and the learning and teaching strategies that are practiced are diverse.

You will find some of these teaching and learning strategies in the puzzle pieces below.  It is difficult to explore one these strategies in isolation of the others, as they are very much linked together.
